This is an excellent translation, and introduction by Mr. Hoffman. The topic is very relevant today with the corruption of many Bishops and priests, and the scandals that have ensued from the vice of pederasty. Everyone can benefit from reading this, and seeing how these problems were dealt with in the past. This should be required reading for every Bishop, priest, and safe environment leader. Additionally it’s good for Catholics to know their history, and non-Catholics to know that despite the weak presence of many Catholic leaders today it has not always been thus nor will it always remain so.

One does not need to be a scholar to read this book. The introduction written by Mr. Hoffman, is very clear, and precise, and does a great deal to help the reader understand the context in which St. Peter Damian’s treatise was written, and exactly what it means. The introduction is a vital part of this book, and should not be skipped!!

"Wake up O man who sinks in the sleep of wretched pleasure! Revive at last, you who have fallen by the lethal sword before the face of your enemies!…You who hear Christ the reviver, why do you despair of your own resuscitation?" (excerpt from The Book of Gomorrah). Pope Saint John Paul II once remarked that the greatest virtue lacking in our world today is the theological virtue of hope. This virtue given by God imparts to the soul a confident expectancy of receiving God’s help and of attaining to eternal salvation. In our world today which has become increIDgly materialistic and highly sexualized, it has, proportionately, become more difficult to lift our souls and minds to eternal life with God, given in Christ Jesus. How can we possibly experience the freedom of the sons of God when we are slaves of the flesh and of fleshly desires? In an updated translation of St. Peter Damian’s The Book of Gomorrah, Mr. Hoffman presents us with a work of immense and universal value. St. Peter Damian, while rightfully and clearly denouncing the errors of sodomy (which, the translator points out, is much broader than merely homosexual activity, including under its breadth all unnatural sexual acts), also, unlike many "conservative" commentators today, gives a way out of the habitual life of sin: that is, a mortified life in Christ Jesus, the Lord. St. Peter Damian is no mere hireling, fleeing from the necessary confrontation, nor is he a merciless tyrant, scolding without correcting; rather, with great charity, he seeks to bring the soul, dead in sin, to life everlasting in Christ Jesus. Having read with joy this fine translation, I highly recommend it to all.
